Chapter IV of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended) also contains Human Rights provisions that the government of Nigeria is mandated to uphold and enforce.
Are There Provisions That Protect Human Rights in Nigeria? Nigeria is a signatory to several international Human Rights Treaties, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights unanimously adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Convention against Torture and Other Cruel Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, among others. Under international law, Nigeria is obligated to uphold and enforce the rights protected under the International Human Rights Treaties that it has ratified.
Some of the fundamental rights guaranteed by Chapter IV of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended) include:
Right to life Right to dignity of human person
Right to personal liberty
Right to fair hearing
Right to private and family life
Right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion
Right to freedom from discrimination
